Newspapers In Education
Newspapers in Education is a program that helps fight one of the fastest growing
problems facing every community in the United States today...ILLITERACY. There are
over 23 million American adults that are functionally illiterate and over 40% of
fourth graders cannot read. It might be easy to point the finger at our school,
teachers, or the children themselves, but when you consider the video-filled,
fast-paced, information superhighway of today's society, it is easy to see how
children and teens have strayed away from the basics.
This is where Newspapers in Education (NIE) comes in! There are few teaching
tools as powerful as the newspaper. A recent study conducted by the University of
Minnesota found that students in schools with at least some NIE programs did
better on standardized reading tests than those schools without NIE programs.
Newspapers get students into the reading habit, bridging the gap between the
classroom and the real world. It has been proven that students are more motivated
to learn when their school work reflects their own experiences and concerns. All
children do not have the same resources. Many times the only exposure to the
newspaper they receive is in the classroom.
Your business has the opportunity to take an active role in bringing illiteracy
rates down, gain exposure for your business, and help today's children for
tomorrow's challenges! There are many teachers in your area requesting newspapers
for their classrooms. In order to provide this opportunity for teachers and
students, we need your partnership with our NIE program.
